Typical Uses

  • Catalyst in Organic Reactions – Used in Friedel–Crafts acylation and alkylation

  • Intermediate in Vanadium Chemistry – Precursor for vanadium oxide, carbide, and nitride synthesis

  • Material Science – Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of vanadium-containing films

  • Battery Research – In specialized vanadium redox systems and electrode coating

  • Synthesis of Fine Chemicals – Reagent in chlorination and oxidation reactions

Risks

  • Highly Reactive – Fumes strongly in air; reacts violently with water

  • Corrosive – Causes burns to skin, eyes, and mucous membranes

  • Toxic – Harmful if inhaled, swallowed, or on skin

  • Air and Moisture Sensitive – Decomposes with release of hydrogen chloride gas

  • Environmental Hazard – Dangerous to aquatic life

CAS Number

HS Code

2825.90.90 (may vary by jurisdiction)

P Codes (Precautionary Statements)

  • P261: Avoid breathing vapors.

  • P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.

  • P303 + P361 + P353: IF ON SKIN: Remove immediately all contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with water/shower.

  • P305 + P351 + P338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.

  • P310: Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician.

  • P402 + P404: Store in a dry place. Store in a closed container under inert gas.

Storage Conditions

  • Store under dry inert atmosphere (e.g., argon or nitrogen).

  • Use only airtight glass or Teflon-lined containers.

  • Keep away from water, alcohols, amines, and moist air.

  • Storage temperature: room temperature (below 30°C), dry, well-ventilated area.

Shelf Life

  • 3–6 months in sealed, moisture-free containers under inert conditions.

  • Exposure to air or water will reduce shelf life and cause decomposition.
